Time to start blogging again? work, facebook, pinterest, and crafty things have kept me busy.
I finally added new items to my blog, i still have to upload pictures of new jewelry. I will be participating in a craft fair this weekend. Hopefully, i sell out.
I was laid off work after fourteen years, which i think was a blessing in disguise, i was so miserable. I have had the last two months to work on art projects, projects that have been in my head forever and i finally got to work on them.
I did just get a new job, i hope i can find time for myself with this new job,i mean, i will find time!
WE had a beautiful thanksgiving. Family and Friends being thankful for each other.
Well, i am now off to spend time with my favorite girl!

Whoa, it has almost been a year. wow. things have been moving fast around here.
The whole face book thing is kind of crazy?? everyone moving over to that as a form of communication, the further we move along the less we actually have to speak to each other.

Spring is finally here, it tried to fool us a few times, but it looks like things are really growing now.

E is graduating in June, i am super sad for her to be moving on. Of course I am proud and happy that she has done so well and is such a great person. I will just miss her -my best friend-.

Not that I have anything against Oprah, but sometime she can be so ….i don’t know, unaware? is that the word I want? Anyway, Last night was a rerun of a show with the author of Beautiful boy and his son. During the interview the son said more than once that he had been ashamed of his behavior and his addiction. He was ashamed of many of the things he did during the time he was so deep into the drugs and alcohol. He knew that he was hurting his family but the shame and the addiction were so strong that he couldn’t stop.
So, then O asks him, If you knew you were hurting the people that loved you, why did you keep doing it? I am thinking really? O, did you not notice that one, he is young man still hurting. Two, he is an addict. Three, he was very deep in shame and Four, he is an ADDICT. I do not know the reason behind all the shame and his need to numb himself but, i do know that there is no easy way out.
Something that you would think she would understand. Hey, O, if you know that the food you consume causes you to gain weight and make you feel bad, why don’t you just control the intake.
Seriously, if it was that simple-"Hey, this is making me and everyone around me feel like shit-I guess I will just stop drinking, snorting coke, overeating, gambling, and obsessing"-we wouldn't need all the rehab centers and twelve step programs.
It was really amazing that she asked such questions.
Anyway, enough rambling about something I have no control over.

I understand that Oprah may have just made a mistake, but i felt really sad for the young man. He already was feeling so guilty and ashamed, i didn't see the need to make him feel worse. I am sure that was not the intention.

Warrior

Since i have been reading the book mentioned in the last post there have been a million thoughts going through my head. Some good, some not so good. I guess you have to feel it all to make headway-just a little bit hard to look at yourself this way.
I would say that in order to live authentically you have to become a warrior of sorts. There are going to be people blocking you and not accepting your changes. They may like that they can bully you, shame you, or reside with you in the misery. You will have to fight against yourself, which i know is not an easy battle.
If the plan is to move forward, fight the urge to stay the same and understand what you need and how to get it. It will take courage, and you will have to become a champion for your cause, these are the traits of a warrior.
Easy to talk about and hard to do. But, if we can releast that inner warrior the battle should be a little less scary.

i have been reading this blog and Brene Brown's book, I thought it was just me.

Man is it perfect. I thought i knew a lot about shame and the hold it has on us, but this book is so amazing. It really isn't just me.

I do feel bad about some of the things i do in order to hide the shame or to shame others. This book is really helping to understand and then to become "shame resilient". A long way to go, but admitting you have a problem is the first step!!!! right?

Anyway, i highly recommend this book and her web site- ordinary courage I do not have the link set up sorry. I will try to remember how to do that tomorrow.

So, winter is still hanging on-it is the time of year that you start thinking of all the great places you could be besides here.
There is still snow piled up, but it isn't the pretty, white, fluffy stuff you love-no, it is the hard, crusty, dirty snow piled up in driveways, on the side of the road and in parking lots.
It is the time of year when you need anti depressants, extra wine, a new family etc....
If we can just make it a couple of more weeks, it should be spring. One can only hope!!!!!!

There Is Only Now
It can be easy for us to walk through the world and our lives without really being present. While dwelling on the past and living for the future are common pastimes, it is physically impossible to live anywhere but the present moment. We cannot step out our front door and take a left turn to May of last year, any more than we can take a right turn to December 2010. Nevertheless, we can easily miss the future we are waiting for as it becomes the now we are too busy to pay attention to. We then spend the rest of our time playing “catch up” to the moment that we just let pass by. During moments like these, it is important to remember that there is only Now.

In order to feel more at home in the present moment, it is important to try to stay aware, open, and receptive. Being in the present moment requires our full attention so that we are fully awake to experience it. When we are fully present, our minds do not wander. We are focused on what is going on right now, rather than thinking about what just happened or worrying about what is going to happen next. Being present lets us experience each moment in our lives in a way that cannot be fully lived through memory or fantasy.

When we begin to corral our attention into the present moment, it can be almost overwhelming to be here. There is a state of stillness that has to happen that can take some getting used to, and the mind chatter that so often gets us into our heads and out of the present moment doesn’t have as much to do. We may feel a lack of control because we aren’t busy planning our next move, assessing our current situation, or anticipating the future. Instead, being present requires that we be flexible, creative, attentive, and spontaneous. Each present moment is completely new, and nothing like it has happened or will ever happen again. As you move through your day, remember to stay present in each moment. In doing so, you will live your life without having to wait for the future or yearn for the past. Life happens to us when we happen to life in the Now.

first day of school tomorrow. End of summer. Fall begins. lunches have to be made. Clothes have to be organized. Closets Cleaned. Garden weeded and harvested. This summer was way too short. I think it was only about six weeks. Spring came so late and fall to early.

My friend Keith Morris is having another novel published at the end of this month. The Dart League King keeps you reading and wanting to learn more about these small town characters and what has brought them all to this point.

I will post his reading schedule this week and a link to his blog as well. Actually, there is no blog until I help him set it up-so hopefully by this week that will be done-

We are having a BIG party for him over at the winery on September 27 at 5pm...books to be signed and questions to ask and wine to be drunk.

time flies doesn't it?

summer time and i am trying to cram as much as I can into the 2 months that we get.

camping, concerts, boating, gardening and of course working-yuk-

anyway, i have been making jewelry and getting rid of it as soon as it is done. No pictures but, I will hopefully make more this weekend and get some photos.

I want to go to another art retreat, one that has photography classes. I will keep looking for one that is close.

On Tuesday night we had a HUGE thunder storm. lightenig and thunder that you would not believe.It was all around our neighborhood. I was on the computer, My dauhgter's laptop, when it began. All at once there was a crazy bolt of lightening that lit up the night and at the exact same time the loudest thunder that I have ever heard. so loud the house shook and i threw the lap top off my lap onto the floor.
I was home alone and i was freaking out!!
The storm went on for hours.

I knew that the lightening must have struck something near by but i could not tell since it was so dark.
anyway, the next day when i was riding my bike home from work, i noticed a weird tree in the field. I got off my bike and walked over to the neighbor's and he showed me the tree in his yard that was literally blown to pieces. SCARY. It was right next door. I went over to touch it and take a piece of the tree home.

I did mess up the computer and that was what was most important to everyone as I was telling the story! I do have some pictures I will download and post so you can see the tree.

Been gone for awhile...gardening, family, flu, guests, work, and life...trying to get back into the groove...

So far things have been moving pretty fast this June. I can't believe it. before you know it we will be talking about fall again.

Back to the interviews...Today we have an interview with a very talented and kind woman..Michelle Allen of Allen Designs

Please tell us a little about yourself

I’m 35, married for 15 years, two daughters (13 and 8) and a dog.

And a little about what you do

Ohhhh. What do I do? I’m an artist, I design gift product, paint canvas, create, explore… get distracted! And, I’m a business owner, I manage four employees, cast vision, organize, do wholesale shows, analyze inventory, pay bills and whatever else needs to be done.

I am curious about how you started your business . How did that start and are you surprised at how successful it has become.
(I think I told you that I saw some of your work at a shop here in my small town. I got all excited for you.)

About 15 years ago I decided to go back to school for graphic design. I registered, went to my first day of classes and headed over to the college bookstore. When I was there I saw this amazing book on taking recycled picture frames and turning them into colorful artwork. We were so broke at the time I left that book behind and drove 30 minutes home only with the required books. I couldn’t get that colorful, creative book out of my mind. I finally got back in my car and drove back to the college, dropped the classes, returned the books and bought my “new college class”! I got home and my husband drove me to Home Depot, helped me buy a scroll saw, set it up and showed me how to work it. From there I began making all kinds of misc. things-wall plaques, key holders, greeting cards, clocks, magnets. One thing led to another.

Am I surprised? Yes! I never wanted to be an artist. I watched my mom struggle as an artist all my growing up years. It definitely wasn’t on the top of my “to do” list!

I see that you travel to China for your work. How many times a year do you go and what exactly happens in China?

I go twice a year. The wholesale markets are in the Winter-Jan.& Feb. and Summer-June & July so I go and develop the new lines for each season. I have posted on my blog the past two trips to China and all that goes on while I’m there if you would like to see more detail.

You are a very talented artist, how does it feel to be able to do what you love for a living.

It’s a huge blessing! I can’t imagine doing anything else. My heart aches for people who have to work day in and day out at jobs they don’t enjoy or have a passion for. I have much to be thankful for.

I see that your mom has a blog and that she is also a very talented woman. How has she influenced your art and business?

She’s been a huge inspiration to me in so many ways. When I was young she taught me to draw and to “see”. She’s a hard worker and a problem solver and has modeled that for me my whole life. Like I said earlier I watched my mom struggle as an artist when I was young but she never gave up. Now she’s published and making a living as an artist/author. And, she has always been my #1 cheerleader!

When did you realize that you were a creative soul? And what was the first thing that you created?

I probably started feeling most creative in middle school when I would draw with blue Bic pens tattoos all over my friends arms. Now, having a middle schooler myself, I’m sure their parents were also embracing my creativity!

What most inspires you?

Color and patterns of any sort inspire me. Of late I’ve been spending a lot of time paying attention to things in nature. I am a blog addict so seeing what others are creating makes me want to get my brushes gooey!

Do you have a studio in your home or is everything offsite?

We have 3.5 acres which include our home, a studio where our US made line is produced and everything is shipped out of and a larger shop that houses warehouse space, a woodshop and a smaller studio where I work and Katy my graphics gal works.

You have two daughters, is it hard to manage motherhood, work, and travel? As a mother I am always curious to see how other women deal with these issues.

It was a lot harder when they were younger and crying every time I left for shows or China. The loads of guilt were heavy! I had to always remind myself that when I’m home – I’m home! Now they’re used to the schedule and they always know where to find me.
It will be interesting to see what they say about their mom working when they grow up. I’m sure they’ll be in counseling for something! Lol!

Michelle, I have to say that when ever I read your blog I get such a good feeling. You give off such an amazingly kind energy with your words, pictures and art. It is no wonder that you are such a success as an artist, business woman and a person.

How did i get so lucky to become the mother of the most amazing child? Not only does she love me she actually likes me. last night she told us that she "Loves our Family". That was after I made her do the old fire drill around the car on our way to get ice cream while wearing our pj's and slippers...

Being a mother is something i was never sure if i could do. I am an all or nothing type of person ( i am finding this out after all these years) So, having a child was something i knew would be an extreme emotional take over of my being. Loving something so much that it actually is painful was a scary thing to me. How would i handle all the anxiety that comes with this responsibility?

The hurt feelings, the disappointments, the trying to protect her from any harm? --This has been as hard as I thought, by the way!!--

But, I am slowly learning that I can not race her to "what might happen", that I need to just to be beisde her with all my love and support...(very hard)...I really just want to stop any 'badness' that may be lurking up ahead--but, I am working on it-

Anyway, Mother's day as we all know is really everyday, isn't it??

So Happy Mother's day to you all -

Finally it starting to feel like spring. The grass is green and you can see actual buds on the trees.

The bird feeder has been full of birds for two weeks now. We even had a blanket out in the yard last weekend for reading and doing homework and getting some very much missed sun.

My daughter's best friend had braces and now she is getting glasses. Em is beside herself because she wants glasses and braces...isn't it funny that the things that are nearly perfect on her she isn't happy with?? I tried to explain that to her, but no...I told her to get fake glasses..that was dumb!

So Glad it is Friday..this has been a long week and i only walked to work twice...

Still reading Extremely close and Incredibly Loud. I left if for awhile, it is such a cool book, I love the way it is written. If you have the chance you should really try it out I think you will be amazed. Seriously, go get it now.

I went with my friend Megan and we had a photo shoot with the girls. Megan needed models for her web site. The girls had a blast with all the fluffy cinderella dresses. I tried to learn some stuff. It was a fun day and we got some cute pictures. As you can see below.

I still have only processed two pics i will work on more this weekend. Time has just been flying by and haven't had a chance to post anything too interesting, sorry...

Work has even been really busy which is great as it makes the day easier to deal with.

My friend and I are trying to work on having a small 'art retreat' type thing here on the lake. just a couple of teachers and small groups. I think it would be really fun and it is such a beautiful spot to hold something like this. Just a lot of work organizing, I am not sure if we need to plan for next year or try for this fall. Actually things look good, I just get scared of "what could happen".

Anyway, one more picture and I know it isn't the best processing but it was this or no picture at all and we couldn't have that!

I also noticed that the images I process and post from the laptop do not look the same on other computers. They look fine on the lap top screen and then a lot darker on the computer screen at work. So I don't know if you see it as too dark or if it looks fine?

Things are getting hectic with spring cleaning and bathroom remodel. Time has been slipping away.

The bad news is now my bathroom is the nicest room in the house!

New book club books-The Glass Castle and The Good Earth. I loved The Good Earth when I was in Junior High. That and Go Ask Alice...Remember that book, Everyone was reading it. Then I remember sneaking my mom's copy of Fear of Flying-Probably not the best reading for a teenager.

I did quit my old book club and now will have a new book club with no negativity!!

One of the saddest parts of depression for me is when the days get longer and I feel so much better. My mind and body feel more alive, I notice all kinds of things, my brain is going 100 miles an hour, I want to do stuff, things make more sense, I understand and try to work on the issues at hand and feel great about it… But, then I think to myself…is this just part of the cycle? The time of year where the days are longer and my depression goes to sleep for the summer??
Then I get a little sad, because I am starting to feel so good, but I don’t know if it is going to last or if it is just a trick…(I hate that feeling)
But, then I think maybe I am realizing this because I am getting better, you know…at least you have acknowledged the possibilities. See how well your therapy and acupuncture and sunshine and exercise are working…blah blah blah
I know, I know, just enjoy the moment, and be happy with this good feeling, go with it….
Believe me I want to …and that is the plan.
This was just a public service announcement to myself.

So, I walked to work all week and today it was actually sunny and nice. I have not had the camera on these walks, I don’t want to have to carry it to work. I haven’t really seen anything exciting to take pictures of anyway. Just dirty snow, old rail road ties, a dirty pink snow boot, an old beat up tennis shoe, a weird CD of some sort, a giant ant hill with white plastic bags sticking out of it, a case of Rainer stuck in a dirty, sandy snow burm, three kids with play rifles stuck down their pants (no holsters I guess), a real scary dog that gave me the evil eye… I pretended not to look his way, oh and a guy getting pulled over for speeding!! Ya HOO, I loved that, he was very rude when he drove past me and then when I got to work there was a giant hole in the parking lot filled with water, mud and three grown men…HMMMMM???

Oh and I sold three books on amazon which was very exciting. I am going to lunch today with my friend, she is buying –birthday present..

Oh ya, I quit my book club. They were kind of mean to each other sometimes and it started feeling really negative and not that fun. I will have to start a new one where we only read books that I like and everyone has to get along. HA!!

Monday is my birthday. I am usually celebrating
two weeks before and two weeks after. This year I haven't thought about it much. Is that what happens when you get middle aged?

We still have so much snow here and it keeps snowing, I am seriously contemplating leaving everything here and running away to arizona, mexico, hawaii........No one will notice. Until they need dinner, socks, a ride somewhere or help finding the lost kazoo.

Please tell us a little about yourself

And a little about what you do

I reside in the beautiful land of New Zealand where our winters are brisk and our summers are balmy. I still live in the town that I was born in and have no desire to move, I love this little old town. In a five-minute drive I can be in the country or by the ocean. I can see the mountains, feel the ocean, smell the salty sea air.
I live a simple yet fulfilled life with my beautiful partner of 21 wonderful years.
My passion is creating assemblages and capturing images of the world around me as I see it. I create art from my soul and many of my pieces are part of a journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

Out of your work with photography and assemblage, which one do you prefer and why.

To be honest I couldn’t choose just one, I adore them both equally. I really think that it depends on my mood and what is inspiring me at that particular point and time as to which medium I go with on the day. I’ve been taking photographs for longer than I have been creating assemblages but I do enjoy both.

I enjoy your photography as much as your assemblage work. The photos seem more tranquil.

I guess that my photographs do tend to be more tranquil than my assemblage work. I think that the reason for this is because I’m able to manipulate my assemblages more so than my photographs. Personally I feel that my assemblage work represents more of a deeper level of conscious and sub-conscious thought so it’s understandable that when comparing the two mediums that my assemblages may appear less tranquil. You could liken it to the Ying-Yang scenario where one balances and compliments the other.

How long does it take to create an assemblage piece and how do you come up with the design

The time that it takes me really depends on several things, things like; my health, whether the piece is flowing in the direction that I would like, whether or not I need to hunt for a particular element that the piece might require, that sort of thing.
As a general indication though I can work on a piece anywhere from a week to several weeks, possibly longer depending on size. When it comes to finishing a piece I tend to be my worst enemy though, once I start I really like to try complete the work before moving on to start another. It’s the way that I prefer to work.
The design usually begins as an idea that has been floating about in my mind, a word or a phrase, or something that has just come to me usually when I’m lying in bed trying to get to sleep. It’s almost like one of those eureka moments and I have to get up and jot a few ideas down otherwise I wont be able to get to sleep! Those pieces are usually something that is created fairly quickly as I don’t have as much time to think the process through, it’s all about getting the idea out and turning it into something 3-dimensional. Sometimes I will roughly plan a few details on paper before I start, such as, layout and which elements I might use. However in saying that most of time my plans change as the piece progresses and it nearly always ends up differing from my original plan.

When did you realize that you were a creative soul? And what was the first thing that you created?

I’ve always been a fairly creative soul. I remember as a child having a desire to create things using boxes, card and cellotape. I’d always be asking my mum to keep little boxes, packets, lids and containers for me so that I could ‘make something’. These days I am happy to say that cellotape is still used in my work but I have found other stuff that is a lot stickier like ‘no more nails’!

The first thing that I created would have to be one of those many sculptures of ‘junk’ that I handcrafted as a child.

What most inspires you?

Everything! Colours, juxtapositions of objects, words, emotions, people, music and numerous other things inspire me.

Are there certain artists that you feel connected to

It is usually the artists whose work really strikes me at a level that I’m not expecting that I feel a connection with. It brings to my consciousness a message or way of thinking that moves me. I guess you could say that it stirs my soul.
I do feel like some artists understand what my art is about and in turn there is a bond of common understanding and admiration.

Do you have a studio in your home and is it a place that you feel the most creative, or is it just a place to get your work done.

Yes, I have a very small modest studio in my home. It used to be a spare bedroom but I’ve commandeered it for my place of creation. I dream of having a little studio of my own in the garden with skylights, french windows and doors, just as well dreams don’t cost lots of money! My bedroom studio is lovely though and I do feel creative when I’m in it, I just wish that it got more sun. Over the winter months it can be quite chilly and I have been known to gear up with wool hats, fingerless gloves, arm warmers and thick jumpers just so that I can venture in there!

The name of your blog is Speak Without my Voice, why did you choose that title

The name is a line of lyrics from a favourite Incubus song of mine, called “Pantomime”. It simply means that I am expressing to viewers the world through my eyes using the visual mediums of art and photography as opposed to the written word, the ability to speak without my voice.

I have read in your blog that you suffer from FMS, how does that affect your art work

Many of my pieces are based on emotions that are bought about by having a disability and all of the numerous issues that go with it. On a personal level my art is an outlet of expression and release. To create something solid that I can actually physically hold and feel knowing that it stems from a hidden disability helps me to deal with issues.

On a physical level having FMS is so very frustrating. Learning what my pain triggers are and limiting them if possible is a big help but unfortunately this condition likes to sneak up on you when you least expect it making you feel pain and discomfort all over for no reason. When I’m having a particularly bad flare I avoid all artwork, my arms become very achy and tired that even holding onto and peeling a potato is a mammoth task.

How do you cope with not being able to create while you are having an unusually bad bout with FMS

It’s not easy, I absolutely hate being ruled by my body and pain but unfortunately I have no choice but to listen to my body and try not argue with it quite so much, however there are still times where I overdo things and yes indeed I suffer for it. If I’m in between pieces when I have a flare I just rest and wait for the pain to ease. However if I’m halfway through creating something and the fibro kicks into gear I have been known to try to ignore it and carry on working which only ends up making it worse and it takes a lot longer to recover. Like I mentioned earlier, I like to finish a piece once I start and having to stop halfway through is somewhat frustrating to say the least. I’m still learning to deal.

What are your plans for this coming winter? (ha, it is spring here and I almost asked you what your plans for summer were are)

I don’t make plans too far ahead as I never know what I’m going to be like. I try not to put too much pressure on myself with taking on too much as I feel terrible if the worst happens and I am unable make a deadline. With that being said, I’m sure that I’ll create something over the winter months, I’m just unaware as to what that might be yet.

There is not a lot to say that would be of real interest lately. Well nothing that i would feel comfortable sharing over the internet. I often wonder how it seems to come easy for some people to share so much with strangers. I know i find it fascinating to read other blogs. In fact I love it. There are times when I am so tempted to write what is going on with my life. But, I do not want any strangers (or friends) judging me. I wouldn't want any advice unless it was really nice and didn't hurt my feelings. That's just me.
I also see that there are people out there just posting the most mundane of things and people (including me) just keep coming back for more. What is that??

As you can see I have been very naughty with my interviews, I was doing so well keeping up with everything. Then as I was sailing along...BAM...I get hit with the gray, cloudy, snowy and dark weather. Which caused a little downward spiral in what is sometimes called ...depression. I was doing so well too. It totally caught me off guard this time, before i knew it, I was down.
But, I am working on it. Working my way back. Was that too much information?

Anyway, i have been laying around playing with phots and trying to teach myself how to use photoshop. it really has been fun.

ok. I think I will work on my bookcrossing interview later tomorrow. My friend Heather, who lives right here is a co-founder and she had some secret news for me to share. But that was like two weeks ago, so the secret might be out already...ha! I have been bad.
Ok...I swear I am on my way. Just one more chapter in my new book.

We have a sunny day today after another two day snow storm. I am on my way out to do a little snow shoeing hopefully there will only be a a week or so more left of this ritual. I will miss it though, the solitide and the time to think things through. I will not miss the cold and gray much I am sooooooo ready for sunny weather and a sunnier me.

I am thankful that I am not defined by my mistakes...at least i keep repeating this to myself. Hopefully i can start to believe.

Tending The Emotions

Having A Breakdown

Most of us have had the experience of holding back our emotions for such a long period of time that when they finally come out, we have something resembling a breakdown. For a certain period of time, the overwhelming flood of feelings coursing through our bodies consumes us, and we stop functioning. Often, these outbursts take us by surprise, welling up within us as we drive to or from work, watch a movie, or engage in some otherwise mundane task. We may feel like we do not know what triggered us, or if we do know, it does not make sense of our overpowering emotional response. This is because we are releasing feelings that have accumulated over a long period of time, and whatever inspired the release was just a catalyst for a much larger, much needed catharsis.

When we find ourselves in the midst of such an experience, it is important that we allow it to happen, rather than fight it or try to shut down. Wherever we are, we can try to find a private, safe place in which to let our feelings out. If we can not access such a place immediately, we can promise to set aside some time for ourselves at our earliest possible convenience, perhaps taking a day off work. The important thing is that we need to give our emotional system some much-needed attention. It is essential that we allow ourselves to release the pent-up emotions inside ourselves so that they do not create imbalances in our bodies and minds.

When you are feeling better, make a plan to find a way to process your emotions more regularly. You can do this by employing a therapist or making a regular date to talk to a trusted friend. Journaling can also be a great way to acknowledge and release your emotions, as can certain forms of meditation. Making room in your life for tending your emotions on a regular basis will keep you healthy, balanced, and ready for life.

Tell us about yourself…

Like many photographers, I started photographing in my teens. I was fortunate to go to a high school that required every student to take an art class that was half studio arts (painting, drawing etc.) and half photography. We all had plastic Diana cameras, shot Tri-X 120 black and white film, and processed our own work. I loved it, went on to take every photography course the school offered and spent a lot of time in a very small, dark room in high school.

Cut to grown up days…I had a 15-year career in the film industry as a freelance production manager on feature films (Black Hawk Down, Hannibal, Peacemaker) doing non-creative work and realized I needed to get back to photography, so a few years ago I came back to photography.

What motivated you to start your blog?
What made you decide to begin this project? And do you feel obligated to create a work a day or is it something that you look forward to?

When I moved to the DC area in the summer of 2006, a respected artist and blogger named Lenny Campello of Daily Campello Art Newsreviewed the first show I was in at the Torpedo Factory. He mentioned me and opened my eyes to the world of blogs. Daily works blogs were becoming popular and I thought it would be a great personal exercise – to force myself to create a piece, good or bad, every day. I started A Small Work A Day with all good intentions, but now I post a few times a week versus everyday, and I don’t beat myself up over it. I like to do my daily piece first thing in the morning, so if I don’t, it gets away from me.

How has your art evolved since you started this project?

It really helped me develop my style. When I started the daily work I was all over the map. It didn’t look like the work came from one person. I worked through a couple of phases before finding my place.

Will you go through the process you take in creating one piece?

So many people ask me about my technique. At the moment I’m photographing landscapes with an eye towards a collection I’m developing for a solo show I have coming up in 2009. The show is titled “The Road Less Traveled By” after the Frost poem.

I start with a digital capture, and begin my post processing by making a technically high quality “straight” image; you know, all the basics – contrast, saturation, tweaking highlights and shadows, color balance. After that my fun begins! I decide how I want the world to look – ha ha! I often combine elements from different images, like putting a flock of birds in the sky where there were none. When I have the subject matter the way I want it then I move on to texture.

Over the course of more than 25 years of making photographic images I have experimented with various types of transfer printing. The use of texture in my current digital work is an outgrowth of that. I have always been in love with the “less than perfect” look of transfers, the unpredictable nature of the process.

Layering textures is where I have the most fun; I shoot all my own textures. Even though I’m using a computer, I still do a lot of experimentation, a lot of “what if” scenarios with the textures and blending methods I use. I’m still able to experience the unpredictable nature of the process!

What is your art background?

As I mentioned, my early training in art and photography was pretty unique. Andover, the boarding school I went to has an extensive art department and I took full advantage of it. Beyond that, I took a few art classes in college, but I’m largely self-taught.

Can you tell us a little about Print for the Cure and how you came up with that idea?

At the beginning of 2007 both my siblings were diagnosed with cancer. First my sister with breast cancer, and about 2 weeks later my brother with prostate cancer. Two years earlier my husband had had prostate cancer. I wanted to do something! I asked myself what I could do to make a difference? I realized that by selling affordable art I could make larger monetary donations to research organizations and maybe get more people involved with the organizations I have supported. By the way, siblings and husband are all doing well.

Are there certain art blogs that you visit for inspiration and/or fun?

I visit Daily Campello Art News all the time to stay current on the DC art scene and I have to say I’m somewhat of a flickr addict, there is so much great work out there it’s amazing!

What I'm Afraid of Friday

I am afraid of the long bridge collapsing while I am driving across and then being stuck in the car.

I used to be afraid that this would happen and I wouldn't be able to unbuckle the car seat.

There are hundreds of weird things that I am afraid of ...driving, germy shopping carts, kidnappers, UFO's, grasshoppers, cougars, bears, getting old, losing my child somewhere, mold, some of my neighbors, hiking (there could be a wild animal or a kidnapper), people judging me for being afraid,

closets (dark scary ones)...and the list goes on and on .
